A teenager from Turlock has won The Bee’s “Picture Wheels” photo contest, it was announced today.
As he walked in the country west of Turlock, Eddie Campbell snapped his winning photo of a pile of abandoned tires along railroad tracks.
Campbell shot the picture in color with his Canon digital camera, then converted the image to black and white in a computer.
Campbell, 17, a senior at Pitman High School, said he will attend California State University, Stanislaus. A self-taught photographer, he plans to take some journalism classes.
The image received the most votes from readers in the contest, edging out a bicycle trick picture by Garrett Vick of Modesto.
Vick used his Nikon digital camera and two flash units to capture his friend Will Estolero doing a “foot jam” on his bike. Vick, 18, is a student at Modesto Junior College and works at In-N-Out Burger.
Campbell and Vick’s photos received nearly 5,000 votes between them, far outdistancing the other eight finalists in the contest.
Campbell will receive an assortment of prizes from The Bee, and his and Vick's photos are scheduled to appear in The Bee on Tuesday.
