MERCED -- A man wanted in connection with a March 22 shooting at a quinceañera turned himself in to the Merced Sheriff’s Department on Saturday.
Just after 2 p.m., Hector David Chavez, 21, of Winton reported to the station.
According to Merced County Major Crimes Detective Lane Clark, Chavez turned himself in after deputies searched for him at his mother’s home in Merced.
Through investigation, detectives had identified Chavez as the shooter at the birthday celebration on the 2900 block of Lander Avenue in Stevinson, according to Deputy Tom MacKenzie. That night a fight broke out where someone fired several rounds from a .30 caliber rifle, striking one victim in the foot and hitting several unoccupied vehicles.
Chavez was booked into the county jail on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and firing a rifle in a negligent manner. He was being held on $100,000 bail.
