An apartment house fire on Ensenada Drive in north Modesto early this morning sent a mother and her toddler daughter to the hospital as a precautionary measure, according to fire officials.
The fire broke out about 12:20 a.m., and when crews arrived, heavy flames and smoke were streaming from one of the units on the 1300 block of Ensenada, said Battalion Chief Mark Johansen. He said crews were able to knock down the fire relatively quickly and that the fire was contained to the one unit.
He said the 26-year-old mother and her 3-year-old daughter were taken to a hospital and later released. A 78-year-old grandmother was also in the apartment and was able to get out safely, he said. Nobody else in the apartment house was displaced.
The cause, he said, was still under investigation and possibly originated in the kitchen. Damage is estimated at about $100,000.
