Jean Morris, Modesto’s city clerk and auditor since 1995, plans to resign in December.
The City Council on Tuesday is scheduled to discuss steps it can take to appoint her successor.
Morris is expected to stay in office through next month’s City Council elections and through the potential Dec. 11 runoff race.
She earned $104,100 last year.
Modesto also is in the midst of recruiting someone to fill retiring City Manager George Britton’s position. He is stepping down in January.
The council on Tuesday is scheduled to discuss appointing an acting city manager while it continues looking for his successor.
Britton and Morris are two of Modesto’s three employees who answer directly to the City Council. City Attorney Susana Alcala Wood is the third.
