Modesto Junior College held its 92nd commencement Friday in the east campus stadium. For the spring semester, MJC awarded more than 1,200 associate degrees and nearly 400 certificates of achievement. About 400 graduates participated in Friday’s ceremony, which was held outdoors in the balmy weather.
The student speaker was Carissa Autry, a Modesto native and Beyer High School graduate, who gave a speech titled “Milestones.” Autry competed in the Phi Rho Pi National Speech and Debate Championships in Denver last month and brought home a bronze medal in persuasive speaking.
Music by the MJC Combined Concert Band, under the direction of professor Erik Maki, highlighted the ceremony, which included recognition of the 2014 MJC distinguished alumnus, Rick Tigner, who graduated in 1982. The Sonoma County resident is president of Jackson Family Wines.
