A slate of local artists literally will play for food Saturday night.

It's not for themselves, though. It's for the annual Food 4 Music concert, returning to the Queen Bean Coffeehouse.

There's no monetary entry fee for the food-raising event. Admission is three cans of food or any other nonperishable food item, which will be trucked over to The Salvation Army by organizer Efren Martinez. Also being accepted this year is a five-can entry fee of dog or cat food, which will be donated to the SPCA. A handful of local businesses also have donated food to the cause.

Playing this year are Kymatics (6 p.m.), Third Wheel (7 p.m.), French Cassettes (8 p.m.) and Aaron Durr (9 p.m.). The event is being hosted by Alan Sanchez of "Good Day Sacramento."

The Queen Bean is at 1126 14th St., Modesto. Call 521-8000.

2 Live Crew is back

Wondering if they're still "As Nasty As They Wanna Be?" Find out this weekend when 2 Live Crew returns to Modesto.

You can catch one of rap's original bad-boy groups at the Fat Cat Music House & Lounge on Saturday night. The once controversial hip-hop Crew gained national attention in 1989 when the lyrics from their album "As Nasty As They Wanna Be" became the center of an obscenity suit.

This is the Crew's second visit to the Fat Cat, having played there a year ago. Saturday's 10 p.m.-2 a.m. show also features DJ Recess, DJ Suga Shane and DJ Topek. Tickets are $15, available at tickets.com. The Fat Cat is at 930 11th St. Call 524-1400.

Film screening

The public is invited to Sam Pierstorff's film-appreciation class Nov. 30 for a screening of an Oakland crew's indie feature film, "Smoked."

Many of the actors and the crew come from the Bay Area's slam poetry scene. The film -- which Pierstorff warns is a decidedly R-rated venture with foul language, drugs, nudity and blood -- is about three stoner friends who decide to rob a club, but realize they are in for more than they bargained for after choosing to hit a club run by a local drug lord.

The film will be shown at 2:20 p.m. Nov. 30 in Forum room 110 at Modesto Junior College, 435 College Ave. Seating may be limited. There will be a Q&A after the film.

Legendary ladies

Country music singer Joni Morris, whose music is inspired by Patsy Cline, will perform at the Black Oak Casino on Nov. 27. Morris received a rave review from The San Francisco Examiner. Morris also performs the tunes of Connie Francis, Peggy Lee, Brenda Lee and Skitter Davis, as well as her own original music.

The show at Black Oak, 19400 Tuolumne Road North, Tuolumne, begins at 9 p.m. Tickets are $10. Call 877-747-8777.
