In these tough times, people need encouragement and something to keep them going. Modesto gospel singer Rosetta Mines wants to provide a little inspiration with her 90-minute concert, "An Evening of Praise," July 11 at the Gallo Center for the Arts.
"Whether you are Christian or non-Christian, that doesn't matter," she said. "I hope people leave feeling a little better than when they came."
Mines, 63, will perform with three backup singers and an eight-piece band.
She co-founded and directed the now-defunct Modesto Community Choir, a group of singers from nearly a dozen area churches. It performed at Modesto's International Festival, at California State University, Stanislaus, and other venues around the region.
She has sung in musical theater and performed at the Music Circus in Sacramento and in Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe. She also sang on Princess Cruises' Love Boat.
Mines also produced a gospel album by The Temptations Review, featuring Dennis Edwards, the former lead singer with The Temptations who also sang with The Contours. In 2003, she received a Stanislaus Arts Council Excellence in Arts Award.
Mines said she will sing songs she wrote and some old favorites, and will chat with the audience about the background behind the music. "Some of the songs you write come from the experience you've had," she said.
Her husband, Joe Mines, who is also her manager, was the driving force behind getting her the Gallo Center engagement. He was bothered that there more out-of-town artists performing at the center than local artists.
"I'm doing this to show how Modesto has great talent right here," he said.
The couple want to present the Modesto Community Gospel Festival in Graceada Park in October.
