Ice Cube

The day after he performs at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, legendary rapper and actor Ice Cube headlines Modesto's Summerfest 2009 block party. Ice Cube, 40, began his career in the 1980s in the band NWA, then launched a solo career with such albums as "Death Certificate," "War and Peace" and "Lethal Injection." He has starred in numerous movies, including 1992's "Boyz n the Hood," 1999's "Three Kings" and 2002's "Barbershop." Also performing at Summerfest are early 1990s rappers Candyman and Rodney O.

Honoring dads

The city of Modesto is celebrating the one-year anniversary of the Neighborhood Center at Marshall Park at the park's Summer Music Fest and Celebration of Dads program. The event includes community information booths, children's activities, a bounce house, a bungee run, face painting, food and more. The featured band is The Cartel, supported by Sound Express Mobile DJ Service.

County fair

The gold country's Mother Lode Fair has a long history that dates back to 1889. There are carnival rides, cooking shows, wine tasting, stunt dogs, reptiles, motocross and a destruction derby. Bands this year include Chains Required, No Taboo and the Shane Dwight Band. Entertainment is included in the cost of admission.

'Smokey Joe'

Sierra Repertory Theatre brings back its No. 1 requested show, the rock revue "Smokey Joe's Café." The show celebrates songwriting and producing team Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, who penned such hits as "Hound Dog," "Stand by Me," "On Broadway," "Love Potion No. 9," "Baby, This is Rock and Roll," "Spanish Harlem," "Jailhouse Rock" and "Kansas City."

Drum and bugle

The 30th annual Moonlight Classic Drum and Bugle Corps competition draws some 1,500 participants between the ages of 12 and 21. This year's competition includes world champions the Blue Devils of Concord and Vanguard of Santa Clara. The Moonlight Classic is one of the preliminary competitions leading up to the world competition scheduled in August at Colt's Football Stadium in Indianapolis.
