GALLO CENTER HAS JACKIE ROBINSON TALE AT THE PLATE

Learn about the challenges faced by Jackie Robinson, the first black major-league baseball player, in the play "Most Valuable Player."

Presented by California Theatre Center and targeted for kids grades three and up, the show will be performed at 1 and 3 p.m. Feb. 15 in the Foster Theater at the Gallo Center for the Arts, 1000 I St., Modesto.

'VAGINA MONOLOGUES'

The University of the Pacific is staging Eve Ensler's popular show "The Vagina Monologues" at the DeRosa University Center ballroom today, Saturday and Sunday.

Performances are at 8 p.m. The play covers women's thoughts on topics as far-ranging as birth, love, sex, rape and mutilation.

Tickets are $8 for students and $12 general, with all proceeds going to the Women's Center of San Joaquin County; 946-3275.

GUITAR NIGHT

Some of the top guitar composers from around the world will perform at International Guitar Night on Feb. 14.

The concert is at 8 p.m. in the Foster Theater at the Gallo Center for the Arts, 1000 I St., Modesto.

Host Brian Gore will be joined by French fingerstyle master Pierre Bensusan, renowned American classical guitarist/composer Benjamin Verdery and Cecilia Zabala, a young guitarist and singer from Argentina.

LATIN SINGERS

Nelson Ned of Brazil and Álvaro Torres, an American originally from El Salvador and Guatemala, sing songs of love and romance.

The duo performs at 6 p.m. Feb. 15 at the Rogers Theater in the Gallo Center for the Arts, 1000 I St., Modesto.

Nelson has received gold records in his native Brazil. His songs have been recorded by numerous other artists, including Brazilian superstars Moacir Franco, Antônio Marcos and Agnaldo.

Torres was songwriter of the year by BMI (Broadcast Music Inc.) in 1994 and has recorded several albums including "Algo especial" (Something Special) and "Acariciame" (Caress Me). Tickets are $35-$85; 338-2100 or www.galloarts.org.

SHAKESPEARE ACTING

Prospect Theater Project Founding Artistic Director Jack Souza is offering two acting workshops in February:

• "Shakespeare for Young Adults" (ages 12-16) — Feb. 7, 14, 21 and 28, 10 a.m. to noon. Close study of Shakespearean language and verse, with a presentation of selected works to an invited audience. $100.

• "Acting Shakespeare" (age 16 and up) — Feb. 7, 14, 21 and 28, noon to 3 p.m. Scene study, monologues, sonnets in safe, guided environment. Goal is to hone acting skills, develop audition material and build public speaking skills. $180.

Souza is a 30-year theater veteran who has taught "Introduction to Shakespeare" at Modesto Junior College and has regularly conducted acting workshops for Prospect Theater Project and Murphys Creek Theatre and in New York City. Prospect is at 520 Scenic Drive; 499-5042.
