On Stage

last updated: July 11, 2008 12:00:53 PM

SOUTH PACIFIC

Rodgers & Hammerstein's musical about love and war on an exotic tropical island. Sierra Repertory Theatre's staging combines lush, sets with vibrant, professional talent.

Through Sept. 7 at the Fallon House Theatre, Columbia State Historic Park, off Parrotts Ferry Road, Columbia. $15-$28; 532-3120 or www.sierrarep.org

— Lisa Millegan

ALTAR BOYZ ½

A hilarious musical revue about a Christian boy band. The side-splitting songs include the lyrics "Jesus called me on my cell phone" and the pro-abstinence "Girl, you make me want to wait."

Through Aug. 10 at Sierra Repertory Theatre, 13891 Mono Way, Sonora. $10-$28; 532-3120 or www.sierrarep.org.

— Lisa Millegan

DOUBT

A courtroom drama without the courtroom, this 2005 Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning play centers on sexual abuse in the Catholic church. It will offer plenty of food for thought about ethics.

Through July 20 at Stage 3 Theatre, 208 S. Green St., Sonora. $12-$18; 536-1778 or www.stage3.org.

THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR ½

Shakespeare's comedy is set in a 1980s trailer park. The choice works because of the lowbrow humor but Falstaff isn't old or fat enough and some of the performers didn't seem to have their lines memorized on opening night.

Through July 26 at the Open-air Cornelia B. Stevenot Performing Arts Center, 2690 San Domingo Road, Murphys. $18; 728-0148 or www.murphyscreektheatre.org.
