Sistine Chapel art

Student paintings replicating works inside the Sistine Chapel are back on display at the Beyer High School gallery in Modesto. The public is invited to view them during a reception at 7 p.m. Monday. The paintings were displayed on the ceiling of the art room between 1998 and 2002 and were taken down because they disrupted the school's heating and air-conditioning system, according to a district administrator. The panels were found in a storage bin, and 10 of the works had been broken into pieces. At the time, art teacher Debi Bonsack alleged that the pictures had been removed because of nudity. The new exhibit shows 19 of the once 55 vignettes that Bonsack has pieced back together and restored. "Several years have passed since then, but the truth is: the art department has never been the same. These paintings represented the beauty of great art and five years of awesome kids," said Bonsack.
