Final chances to see 'Enchanted'

"Some Enchanted Evening," a musical revue featuring the songs of Rodgers & Hammerstein, closes this weekend at Playhouse Merced. Shows are at 7:30 p.m. today and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. The show includes songs from the musicals "South Pacific," "The Sound of Music," "Cinderella," "Carousel," "Oklahoma!" and more. Performers are Jim and Diane Kocher, Elyssa Alexander, Andrew Burkum and Kristina Stamper. Tickets are $12-$19. Playhouse Merced is at 452 W. Main St. 725-8587 or www.playhousemerced.com.

Sistine Chapel art

Student paintings replicating works inside the Sistine Chapel are back on display at the Beyer High School gallery in Modesto. The public is invited to view them during a reception at 7 p.m. Monday. The paintings were displayed on the ceiling of the art room between 1998 and 2002 and were taken down because they disrupted the school's heating and air-conditioning system, according to a district administrator. The panels were found in a storage bin, and 10 of the works had been broken into pieces. At the time, art teacher Debi Bonsack alleged that the pictures had been removed because of nudity. The new exhibit shows 19 of the once 55 vignettes that Bonsack has pieced back together and restored. "Several years have passed since then, but the truth is: the art department has never been the same. These paintings represented the beauty of great art and five years of awesome kids," said Bonsack. Band in the park

The Hilmar Community Band will celebrate Turlock's 100th birthday with a free concert at noon Saturday at Turlock's Crane Park, Colorado and Canal streets. The band will play patriotic marches, symphonic overtures, novelty tunes and other period pieces meant to evoke the feeling of an outdoor band concert in 1908. The concert is planned in conjunction with the Centennial History Stroll through downtown. The Turlock Historical Museum will offer docent-led tours. There also will be an Antiques Street Faire from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at East Main and Center streets. Call 668-5599, ext. 4615.

Performers wanted

The Stanislaus Arts Council is seeking singers and musical groups to perform in its 2008-09 Serenades on Sundays concert series. All artists will be compensated for their performances. Performers should submit résumés, publicity materials, photos and recordings to stanarts@att.net or to the Stanislaus Arts Council, 1100 Kansas Ave., Suite F, Modesto 95351. African embroidery

Rene Solomon will teach a class on African folklore embroidery Tuesday in Angels Camp. The class runs from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Country Cloth Shop, 457 S. Main St. According to press materials, what makes this type of embroidery special is that you can use any color to stitch, the chain stitch is the dominant stitch, no hoop is needed and designs can be made into pillows, quilts, wall-hangings and purses or stitched on the back of jackets.
