Thrift and discount stores are definitely seeing their moment these days.
DDs Discounts, which operates a store on Tully Road in Modesto, will open for business at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 1, at 1640 E. Hatch Road in Ceres.
This comes on the heels of second-hand stores, such as Goodwill and Ritzy Ragz, both in Modesto, moving to bigger digs within the last year. Dollar stores also continue to proliferate.

Macy's announced Monday it will open at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, joining a growing number of retailers who have been looking for business on what's traditionally been a holiday.

A lot of times in my job, I find myself writing about awful things happening to people: assaults, homicides, accidents. But I also get to regularly meet people who are doing good things, big and small. Brett Dixon is one of those people.

It's no secret that the Stanislaus County Fair is an economic engine for the area. The amount spent each year on corndogs alone must be staggering. But outside the food and the community groups, there's also booming business at the annual 10-day event.

Restaurants are making great use of social media and other technology these days to deliver information, deals and more. Personally, I get emails from Cotta's Kitchen in Turlock with the weekly menu. Rockin' B's, a new burger place in Modesto, has a lively Facebook presence, as does Earl's Barbecue in Modesto.
