A recap of The Bee's recommendations in the Nov. 4 election:
Proposition 1A (high-speed rail) -- No. A worthy project but too expensive to pursue now.
Proposition 2 (confined animals) -- No. This could wipe out the egg industry in our region; caging chickens is not cruelty.
Proposition 3 (children's hospital bonds) -- No. Money remains from the last bond measure and this is not the time for more state debt.
Proposition 4 (parental notification for abortion) -- No. The state cannot mandate family communication.
Proposition 5 (drug rehabilitation) -- No. This proposal guts the most effective programs and gives addicts a free pass on crimes.
Proposition 6 (law enforcement spending) -- No. This initiative guarantees new state spending with no revenue source and makes multiple law changes.
Proposition 7 (renewable energy) -- No. This initiative puts unreasonable demands on public utilities, ignores individual efforts and doesn't count hydropower, the original renewable energy, as green.
Proposition 8 (against gay marriage) -- No recommendation.
Proposition 9 (victims' rights) -- No. This overly ambitious initiative would write into the constitution things such as no early inmate release, which could cripple county jails.
Proposition 10 (alternative fuel vehicles/bonds) -- No. Another state burden with the potential to do more good for T. Boone Pickens than the environment.
Proposition 11 (creates independent redistricting commission for legislative seats) -- Yes. This will help make seats more competitive.
Proposition 12 (veterans' housing bonds) -- Yes. A small risk to the state to provide housing assistance to those who have served our country.
Measure S (sales tax for transportation improvements) -- Yes. This would raise money to pay for road and street improvements and to advance three east-west corridors.
Assembly District 17 -- Cathleen Galgiani
Assembly District 25 -- Tom Berryhill
Assembly District 26 -- Bill Berryhill
State Senate District 5 -- Lois Wolk
Congressional District 11 -- Jerry McNerney
President -- Barack Obama
