I am proud of Empire. We have had some wonderful changes in our small little town. Friends of the Empire Community Pool did a wonderful job getting a top-rate facility. Many kids were able to swim in a safe environment that is family friendly. Friends of the Empire Library put on a great Halloween celebration and will continue to host a monthly art show for Empire Elementary students. The PTA has been re-established. We have a K-8 school with a wonderful new administration. In so many ways, we are achieving wonderful things.
Then along comes the Empire Sanitary District board, raising sewer rates and demonstrating attitudes that I have never seen in a board. The board follows no parliamentary procedure; the board will not listen to anyone. They have been wasteful for years and now the district is in poverty. There is nepotism among the board and workers. We have a facility that is never open during normal business hours. Where does the town turn to to fix this problem? Who is in charge? Who can help? I hate to see all the great work that is being done in Empire to go to waste.

Editor's Note: The Empire Sanitary District, formed in 1948, is an independent agency, with a five-member elected board, though in recent years there haven't been enough people wanting to run for the positions so the Board of Supervisors has made appointments to fill vacancies.
