After reading the article "Animal clinic's fate up for vote" (Oct. 27, Page A-1), I agree with building a new shelter. I'm sick of seeing homeless animals dead in the streets because they're out running amok in the city because they have no home. The new shelter would provide sterilization for animals at little to no cost, which is needed for the county's overpopulation of dogs and cats. I think it would be very positive and beneficial to the other shelters in the county as well. It would lower the shelter population of animals; therefore reduce the cost of sheltering those animals.

I don't agree that the reason for building a new shelter is to compete with private veterinary hospitals. The program SAVED (Stanislaus Area Veterinarians for the Economically Disadvantaged), which is run by local veterinarian Michael O'Brien, is a good start to fixing the overpopulation of cats and dogs. We can make a bigger impact on the problem by building a specialized building for it.
