After reading the editorial "Caltrans workers need new law and motorists' attention" (Oct. 27, Opinions), I felt the need to voice my concerns. I am appalled at the limited slap on the hand regarding "the violation for the new provision being punishable by a fine of up to $50."
Who in the world decides this penalty is even remotely in line with tragedies that equal death by way of irresponsible and-or negligent drivers? How does driving in the car pool lane warrant a fine punishable of $350, but choosing to not comply with new laws to slow down and-or change lanes for Caltrans and others that provide roadside work and services only warrant up to a $50 fine?
Caltrans and many other highway professionals work hard to provide safe highways for the public. The least we can do is be cautious and respectful of their safety. My husband is the paving superintendent for Granite Construction, and I am very concerned for his safety on a daily basis. He has shared countless incidents of irresponsible drivers who don't consider the safety of his crews, either.
