In The Bee's editorial "Keep making plans for east-west route" (Oct. 25), you state there is everything from "enthusiastic support to fierce opposition" regarding the North County Corridor. I attended the public hearing in Riverbank and the "enthusiastic support" was not shown. What I did see were people concerned about spending more than $1 billion to save only nine minutes in travel time when the project is completed.
I also saw people not opposing it but rather asking why Claribel Road-Kiernan Avenue is not the logical choice, especially since it's under construction. It was also mentioned how is Highway 99, a six-lane highway, going to accommodate 14 lanes of traffic (Kiernan Avenue, Hammett Road and Pelandale Avenue) in such a short distance. It sounded like even Caltrans has questions because this project is being divided into two projects, and Caltrans is not involved in the eastern portion because it doesn't meet their own distance requirements. The repeating theme of speakers at the Riverbank meeting was "make Kiernan work."
There doesn't seem to be a disagreement in needing a east-west corridor but where is the most logical and financially best fit? I think "make Kiernan work!"
