I have just finished reading Thomas Friedman's column, "U.S. needs to get out of Afghanistan" (Oct. 30, Page A-11). I think it is dangerous for the world to simply ignore the problem. "The morning after the morning after" may never dawn. A civilized presence is needed in that region, for nothing else but to protect Pakistan's nukes and prevent Iran from getting their own!
Is it the job of the United States alone to save the world again? Is it worth further expenditure of treasure and the precious blood of our armed forces?
Considering the lack of proper support from our allies and the billions of lives hinging on these questions, the answer, I believe, is, unfortunately, "yes."
My opinion doesn't count for much. Maybe we should ask a Marine or a sailor, a soldier or an airman. Their opinions hold more value. I have never had the honor to serve in their capacity. I wonder if Friedman has? I appreciate the president not rushing to a hasty decision. May God give him the wisdom to make the right one.
