The letter "Pot smokers, tweakers taking over" (Oct. 16) would be hilarious if it weren't so sad. Obviously the writer has had no addictions or shortcomings to speak of.
It's tragic and not so funny. While, yes, drugs are rampant these days, there are many who would choose to have other coping skills and the money to treat such addiction. Drugs and alcohol are an underlying symptom of other problems that affect people deeply and I hardly think it's OK to make it into a laughing matter. The writer seems to think that people are hooked to annoy him personally but he offers no hope or help to the ones who would need a helping hand.
If there's something that bothers you, I was always taught, get up and do something about it. Everything else is counter-productive and his ranting and scoffing only shows a lack of compassion for others or the personal dedication to change our world, one addict or drug user at a time. It's about empowering people to help themselves. If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem.
