Afghanistan safer than Modesto

As I write this, there have been 255 U.S. soldier deaths in Afghanistan for 2009. A population of about 28 million. A war zone. There have been 25 people murdered this year in the greater Modesto area. An estimated population of 250,000. So it looks like in Afghanistan there is one death per 110,000 people, and in Modesto one death in 10,000 people.

I think I'll join the military and take my chances.
