Give Modesto some personality

In May, thousands of people will descend on Modesto for the Amgen Tour of California bicycle race. On show will be some of the best athletes in the world. Also on show will be Modesto's almost total lack of personality.

This is a plea for homeowners, businesses and organizations to gussy up our city. This could be an economic windfall if we give people a reason to spend time here.

Color is the easiest and least expensive way to add interest to anything. Why is every house or building painted some shade of beige or gray? The colors of dust and concrete are not interesting. Take a risk; choose some other colors. Commission an artist to paint a pattern or mural on your huge warehouse. Paint your fence in colorful stripes.

Not an owner and can't paint? Plant flowers in colorful pots next to bright outdoor furniture. Display interesting collections in front windows. Can't rent that retail space? Display art from colleges or elementary schools in the windows. There is something that almost anyone can do to give Modesto some personality. About 2 percent of properties are looking great. The other 98 percent of us could use a makeover.
