In response to "Thank your lucky stars for Reagan" (Letters, June 26): What exactly are you basing your ideas on? That SDI worked? As I recall, we don't have any lasers capable of shooting down nuclear missiles in space, nor do we have the money which was spent on this optimistic yet wasteful program. If you want to see the results of SDI, you can find videos of lasers shooting water towers down on YouTube.

Quite honestly, that is all that came from it. Price estimates for it range from $30 billion to a trillion dollars; no one knows how much was actually spent. Why should we be thankful for a program that failed to meet its objectives and required a cost which isn't known, even today? I support developing missile defense systems, but I also support programs that set realistic rather than fantastic goals, such as Patriot PAC-3, which costs less and actually works.
