It disgusts me that The Bee prints the same broken record, "We're in the United States, we ought speak English." I agree that we should speak English in its proper form and not the current substandard dialect that is spoken in our country, with slurred words, slang and limited vocabulary.
All academic studies support the premise that for each additional language that is acquired, our first language improves dramatically. It is a disgrace that we speak only one language. Until we stop limiting school achievement to a bubble test and evaluate students' writing ability, math reasoning beyond regurgitation and critical thinking strategies in reading, we will continue to function at the lowest common denominator.
The American public needs to rise above the current level of intellectual laziness. For example, one can learn a new language on the Rosetta Stone, instead of the mind-numbing channels that waste so much time.
Two common characteristics of Third World nations: One language is spoken and, two, health care is not available for all citizens. We better rise to the educational challenge or we will continue to sink to second-rate nation status.
