In response "Who's in charge here? How about God" (Feb. 19, Letters): It is easy to feel in charge when everything is going your way, easy to slip into an "I can handle it" attitude. When something like the current economic crisis takes place, it gives us all time to stop and reflect. We are all at risk. Being jobless or homeless can happen to us, our children, our friends.

Our culture has always encouraged us to live high, get more and have the best. While there is nothing wrong with those desires, they are harmful when they encourage us (and we submit) to living beyond our means and never envisioning the outcome of that lifestyle.

I think we would all be happier and better off if we learned to get back to basics. I will admit that the "things" I have collected over the years have become just more clutter to store and-or find a place for. I have started to simplify my life and encourage others to do the same.

Learn to find happiness in serving others and put your faith for the future in God's hands, where it is anyway.
