Prop. 8 about definition, not rights

Birth or life creation is a natural, fundamental, God-given value. This value trumps manmade institutions like state or federal constitutions and judicial decisions. The traditional man-woman marriage can create children, whereas gay relationships cannot. Gay marriage can never be equal to traditional marriage for that reason.

Civil unions can have all of the legal rights a traditional marriage has if the gay couple write up the legal documents such as wills, trusts, health care directives and powers of attorney. If these documents are not available to gay couples, then our government should make them possible.

Attorney General Jerry Brown helped to rewrite Proposition 8 and now advocates to find it unconstitutional. The Proposition 8 discussion should not be about fundamental rights, as Brown states, because gay couples already have the rights. Proposition 8 is about definitions. The gay marriage argument is very different from the 1860 black man who really had no rights.

Our state and national culture is spending millions on this gay marriage/rights argument. Our society would do much better to get beyond this moment and spend money on our social, economic and financial issues of today, which need our greater attention.
