In response to "Make public schools better for all" (Dec. 19, Letters): I lived in Washington, D.C., while serving on active duty in the U.S. Army, and I can safely say that most of the city is an armpit. I wouldn't send my kids to public schools there if my life depended on it.
Besides, the staff and students at a place like Sidwell Friends are used to dealing with children of diplomats and other high-ranking people. No way would the D.C. public schools ever be prepared for this, even though all presidential children have Secret Service details. It would be a logistical nightmare for everyone involved.
The issue has nothing to do with race. The Obamas want their children to be safe and get a quality education. Sidwell can provide this; D.C. public schools cannot. I'd make the same choice.
