Our culture has had black heroes for decades now: Magic, Michael, Shaq, Eddie, Chris, Spike and going back to Cosby, Satchmo, Sammy. And many more were beloved within the greater family that was America.

Their voices, their talent, their physical prowess, but not their intellect? There are examples: Colin Powell, Julian Bond, Martin Luther King Jr., Langston Hughes, Booker T. Washington, George Washington Carver. And the women, too.

Take pride, also, in his white heritage. A family of Kansans, serving their country, proud and loving, fully engaged in establishing a moral and educational base for their child.

Barack Obama is different and new, with a grasp of world issues and a window into his heart. Let us celebrate the new president for being prescient, reflective and capable. He is a blend, after all, of both worlds.

Maybe, just maybe, we've elected the best of the best! Congratulations, USA!
