Unscrupulous and deceptive practices by corporate agribusiness are evident once again. On Sept. 22, a federal court in San Francisco issued an injunction against the American Egg Board so it cannot spend $3 million in checkoff funds to try to prevent the passage of Proposition 2.
On Sept. 23, the front page of the Wall Street Journal announced that the U.S. Department of Justice has subpoenaed records to investigate possible price fixing by leading factory farms who are also major contributors and opponents of Proposition 2.
Proposition 2 is modest, merely allowing the animals enough room to stretch their limbs and turn around. Analysis shows that phasing out cruel confinement would only cost producers less than 1 penny per egg and they have until 2015. Factory farms are hurting consumers, public health, animals and our environment. "Yes" on Prop. 2 to protect animals from extreme forms of cruel confinement for big profits.
