Cage ban has plenty of support

last updated: July 13, 2008 02:36:33 AM

As one of the 4,000 volunteers who collected signatures to place Prop. 2 on the November ballot, I disagree with Julia Olmstead's misguided assumption that this measure doesn't go far enough ("A cage ban? It could do more harm than good," July 9, Page B-7). Prop. 2 is indeed modest. It will simply phase out cruel and inhumane cages and crates. But by doing so, it will end some of the worst abuse in the already notoriously cruel world of factory farming. That's why it's attracted hundreds of endorsements from animal welfare groups like The Humane Society of the United States, the California Veterinary Medical Association, farmers, Sierra Club California, the California Democratic Party and the Center for Food Safety. All animals deserve humane treatment -- and those raised for food are no exception. Please vote "yes" on Prop. 2.
