Concerning Wal-Mart receiving subsidies ("Wal-Mart breaks cancel sales tax gains," April 16), it seems that corporate subsidies are being handed out without public discussion. Does Ceres require a public review of a company's request for tax dollars (subsidies) used for city infrastructure (sewer lines, roads and water mains)? What are all the costs and benefits? What other subsidies might be handed out for the proposed Wal-Mart supercenter?
Subsidies originally are used in blighted areas or given as incentives to companies who bring good jobs that could allow citizens to be self-sufficient and afford a home. Subsidies for Wal-Mart seem to be a misuse of our tax dollars.
