I was disappointed to see that the Farm Animal Cruelty Act got onto the November ballot. I was alarmed when I read the letter to the editor "Bill helps animals, family farmers" (April 19), which applauded the bill.
Americans enjoy the most wholesome and inexpensive food in the world. We spend less of our income on food than people spend anywhere else in the world. Modern American agriculture is responsible for this. Much of this know-how has been transferred to other nations, making life better there. I think it might be cruel to raise the cost of food to the world's poor folks. Humans are important, too.
In spite of emotional animal lovers' feelings, animals don't suffer on modern farms. Sows in furrowing crates don't crush their little pigs like they would if they had the room this bill demands. Laying hens don't get a horrible disease called coccidiosis, which they would get if they were not in cages. Chickens that get this disease bleed to death internally. That's cruel.
If this bill is passed, the only change that will take place is that eggs, milk, pork and veal will be produced in other states. Let's keep food production in California.
