We read with interest Editor Mark Vasché’s column about the Stanislaus County YMCA (“Let’s ensure more families make memories at the Y,” Nov.4, Page A-16). We very much enjoyed the anecdotes he relayed about the memorable experiences he had with his children as participants in YMCA parent-child programs. There are countless other families across Stanislaus County who could tell similar stories.

He concluded his column by stating that he hopes our YMCA will “not only survive but thrive for years to come.”

We could not agree more.

The Stanislaus County YMCA has served the kids, families and communities of Stanislaus County for 86 years, and we look forward to building upon this rich legacy so future generations can reap the benefits of YMCA membership. We believe strongly in our mission of building a healthy spirit, mind and body for all, and we believe strongly in the positive impact that YMCA programs and services have in our community.

As reported by The Bee, our YMCA faces financial challenges. We remain confident that we can overcome them. With the help of the national YMCA office, we are examining our options for returning the Stanislaus County YMCA to good financial health.

We have learned from the mistakes our Y has made in the past, and we are committed to avoiding them in the future.

We have concluded a CEO search and are pleased to announce that a 15-year YMCA veteran will be our new chief executive officer. He will be joining our YMCA and community no later than mid-December. We are very excited about the professional YMCA leadership he brings to our YMCA. He will be instrumental in our YMCA’s recovery.

At the same time, we are grateful for the service of outgoing CEO Steve Smith and appreciate what he has contributed to our YMCA and community.

As a charitable, not-for-profit organization, the Stanislaus County YMCA has counted on support from the community for as long as we have been in operation. The community’s support — financial and otherwise — is as important now as it ever has been. Readers interested in learning more about how to help can contact the Y at 578-9622.

To a person, we are dedicated to maintaining a vital, mission-driven YMCA presence in Stanislaus County. And we look forward to the day when The Bee can devote a front-page story to the Stanislaus County YMCA’s financial recovery.
