The High Five are the five most-read stories, updated hourly.
In the mail recently came the yearly increase notice from the Social Security department, notifying me about my 2008 increase. Imagine my delight when I discovered that the increase was 2.1 percent (oh, joy) and the Medicare premium was increasing 3.2 percent (more joy). How do those in authority, who decide these things, sleep at night? What kind of raises do they receive, and who approves them? I doubt if it is 2 percent. Could they live on that type of yearly increase? Maybe they should have to try it and see how they manage.
Let's get real. It just makes sense to receive at least the cost of living percentages. I can hardly wait for the 2009 figures. Will it be more joy?
