The citizens of Modesto are being asked to decide the fate of Measure I. This ballot measure will allow the community to decide by vote as the need arises when and where to expand. This means developers will have to pitch their ideas to the public, not just seven council members. We see the results of the past 30 years of land management by previous councils and no one seems to like what we have now.
The precious farm land that has been paved over will never be returned to production and, as a community, we can’t afford to lose any more. Imagine Modesto without the existing greenbelt provided by agriculture. How many of Modesto’s citizens have jobs directly tied to our farm land? How many work in wineries, food processing, chemical suppliers, vehicle sales, transportation of food processing and packaging, etc.?
We should be proud that we haven’t lost our agricultural roots and should play to our strengths. Modesto’s preserved jewels include the McHenry Mansion and museum, the E.&J. Gallo Performing Arts Center, our city parks and many trees.
Vote yes on Measure I and provide better direction for the future of our community.
