Re, “Measure G makes for safer Modesto” (Page 1B, Oct. 14): Safe neighborhoods, good schools and efficient government are the result of higher taxes, we’re told by politicians. If this were true, California would have the safest neighborhoods, the best schools and the leanest government in the United States because its residents pay the highest taxes. But higher taxes are not the solution to our bloated, wasteful government.
When you include benefits, salary and overtime pay, our generous city pays handsomely for our public servants – much, much more than what the average private-sector employee receives. It’s time for politicians to be better stewards of the public trust. Vote no on Measure G.

Editor’s Note: California residents pay the second-highest total taxes, ranking behind New York and just ahead of Nebraska.
