Our Grace was a 8-year-old German Shepherd. She had championship lineage but never competed in dog shows; Grace was a champion in a much better way. When Grace came to us we would take her to a nearby field and a local park to let her run and play. Some of her friends were fined for doing what dogs do naturally. How could you be fined for playing in parks when there is no other place to exercise off leash?
Connie and I, as Grace’s parents, asked our city about building a dog park. We would love to, they responded, all you have to do is raise the money. We formed Friends of Modesto Dog Park. With the help of our partners – O’Brien’s Supermarkets, Boyett B Green, NSJVMA, Petco Foundation and Maze and Beckwith Animal Hospitals – we were successful. Modesto Dog Park opened June, 2012, at 601 W. Morris Ave.
Grace died Oct. 13. We thank the Maze and Beckwith Animal Hospital staff for their compassion.
We are overwhelmed by the number of condolences, support and kind words. Next time you visit the Dog Park, think of Grace. She left Modesto a better place.
Never miss a local story.
