Re “Fall’s the time to plant bulbs” (Page 5C, Oct. 1): The article in The Bee needs more of a central California spin on it. Rather than an article from the Chicago Tribune, The Bee should have asked me about bulbs. Having grown well over 100,000 bulbs each year in California’s harsh climate, in one simple interview with me The Bee would allow its readers to better understand what it takes.
Yes, it is time to purchase bulbs, but it certainly isn’t time to plant. Despite cooler temps the last few days, the valley needs to wait till mid- to late-November. Put the bulbs into your refrigerator for 6 to 8 weeks of cooling in your refrigerator; when others go shopping on Black Friday after Thanksgiving, you should be planting your bulbs. Feel free to contact a local expert like me, rather than a lame, regurgitated article from back east that doesn’t apply to our valley.
