I wrote a letter (“Sad that trees were removed,” July 30) about razing all the trees at the site of the former Scenic Nursery in Modesto. This is an update, noting a change in my attitude.
Stephen Mort, CEO of Don’s Mobile Glass, who now owns the land, called and said he and his company liked the majestic cedar that used to stand guard at the old entrance; they petitioned the city of Modesto to allow them to move the entrance east to spare the tree. The city denied the petition. I asked why none of the smaller trees were spared. Mort explained the city is requiring the old fencing to be replaced with an 8-foot concrete wall; the smaller trees stood where the wall’s footings will be. Since the bank took over the property, the lot had been neglected and vandalized and had become a hangout for drug users. So Don’s Mobile Glass made the hard decision to clear everything – buildings and trees.
I no longer blame Don’s Mobile Glass for the loss of those once-beautiful trees. I was surprised to get the call, and at first wasn’t friendly. I came to believe Mort is a good man, mindful of the community and environment. He drives a Volt electric-hybrid car, which is more than I can say for myself. His business plans to plant more trees at the site than were taken out. I hope beauty and prosperity return soon to that corner.
