Bee didn’t tell both sides of story
Frivolous lawsuits over the Americans with Disabilities Act hurt everyone. The Bee needs to tell both sides of the story. Let everyone know why ADA was passed and the problems the disabled have in getting accommodations under ADA. Segregation and discrimination equal to the Jim Crow laws put the mentally disabled and mentally ill into camps without due process, violating the U.S. Constitution.
Getting an accommodation is not easy. I have been turned down by the city of Modesto. One state agency turned me down for an accommodation that another state agency gave me. To sue is the only way to get an accommodation.
Your articles (“Taking a stand vs. taking advantage,’ Aug. 24, 25, 31, Sept. 1 and 7) are counterproductive. All your articles are doing is bringing back the stigma and shame of being disabled. The articles put fear into asking for needed accommodations.
Disabilities include mental illness, mental disabilities, diabetes, heart problems, blindness, hearing impairment, immune deficiencies, physical disabilities and more. Over three-quarters of the population is disabled. Disabled are working men, women, elderly and veterans. Disability does not discriminate. “The disabled” is not them, it is us – get old and see.
