Re “Boycott corporate tax evaders” (Letters, Aug. 31): The writer demonizes big businesses and their respective CEOs by calling them “free-riders” because they don’t want to pay their taxes. The truth is, America’s corporate tax rate, at 35 percent, is among the highest in the world. Between the corporate tax, state taxes (don’t get me started on California), and the socialist train wreck that is Obamacare, businesses cannot thrive, provide people with good-paying jobs with raises and benefits, and contribute to the overall economy.
If businesses are to stay in the United States and live up to their tax obligations, we can start off by lowering the corporate tax rate and updating the tax code to fit the 21st century. Remember that these big CEOs who are often chastised started from humble beginnings themselves, probably living in their parents’ basement for the majority of their young adult lives. They put the blood, sweat, and tears into their work to make it to the top.
