Royena Cartwright: Gray unethical, didn’t report ‘gift’

Re “Lawmaker, official, tribe fined by FPPC” (Page A3, Aug. 12): When we elect people to the state Legislature, we have certain expectations. We want them to truly represent our needs and to conduct themselves with integrity. Unfortunately, we too often see behavior that reveals a contempt for the rule of law and a lack of concern for citizens and taxpayers.

For decades, the Democrat leadership in the Legislature has failed to anticipate and provide for our basic needs, such as the development of adequate water storage. At the same time, these politicians are constantly passing a parade of new taxes and job-killing legislation.

This disconnect with the citizens is coupled with a culture of corruption. A recent example is the fine levied on Assemblyman Adam Gray, who violated election law by not reporting a $1,900 lobbyist gift on his filing forms. Gray is one of many Sacramento politicians who seem to feel they are above the law. Their loyalty lies primarily with the special interests who fund their campaigns and lavish such gifts on them.

We need people in the Legislature who obey the law, and who put the needs of the people above the needs of their financial benefactors.
