Eugene Conrotto: Our appetite for drugs at bottom of border crisis

Legendary journalist H.L. Mencken has it about right: “Democracy is the art of running the circus from the monkey cage.”

Case in point: our response to Central American kids crashing the Texas border. The left would welcome these kids with cash vouchers and a clear path to citizenship. The right would stop these illegals with machine guns. Our country is so polarized on this, and almost every other public policy matter that the middle has collapsed. But, can we – bleeding heart liberals and hard-hearted conservatives – at least agree that the root cause of the border crisis is the bloody Central American drug wars, and that these wars are waged for access to the rich U.S. illegal drug market?

In other words, our politics toward the border crashers should reflect our root responsibility for the plight of these children.
