In the Aug. 7 Opinions section, a letter writer suggested that Modesto Irrigation District should open cooling centers. By coincidence, I was looking at a bill for work from a reputable heating and air conditioning firm in Modesto. My air unit went out on Aug. 1, and I called the repair company to come out the next day. About 5 p.m. that evening, I went to the thermostat and touched a few buttons and all of a sudden, the unit came on and stayed on. It was too late to cancel my appointment.
The technician came out and decided to check the unit even though it was working. When he was done, he told me that I have an MID step box that shuts off my unit automatically during peak-use periods to avoid blackouts. I did not know I had one. So I called MID. They were very helpful in gathering all the info on the box, which they said I had signed up for in 2002. I believe I can speak for all seniors in saying we should get a $5 discount on our monthly bill. At this time, MID is gracefully looking into the matter for me.
