I am responding to “Most young women don’t marry before having babies” (Page A11, June 25): Writer Jordan Weissmann asserts that since the majority of U.S. births occur outside of marriage, this should be considered the “new normal.” He links single motherhood to divides in education, opportunity and income and the subsequent poor long-term financial outcomes. He states these families should not be deprived of a decent living standard and we should grow the safety net and make their lives easier.
Becoming an adult is about controlling impulses, personal discipline and taking responsibility for one’s actions. There are consequences to the decisions we make; adults take responsibility for their decisions.
Weissmann suggests we enable this destructive behavior. It is extremely selfish for an individual to bring a child into the world and expect taxpayers to pay the bill. It is up to us to control our own feral behavior and accept the consequences of our decisions. I am not suggesting we make life harder for single mothers, but biological fathers have a responsibility to provide, not taxpayers. It is clear the “give me more” mentality of the liberals never ends.
