I read the article written by Tom Slear, “Military benefits too generous?” (Opinions, June 12). My husband was a World War II veteran who served overseas and was wounded in the left foot. He was paid $50 per month, as was I, and after our daughter was born I got another $25 per month. When the war was over he got what they called “52-20.” For 52 weeks he was allowed $20 per week. He was treated with excellent care at the Veterans Nursing Home for 3 1/2 years before he passed away in June 2004. At least that cost me nothing.
I’m thankful to know our servicemen and families are treated better now.
