I have been a resident of the Modesto area and a subscriber of The Modesto Bee for a number of years. There are many criticisms I could make about The Bee. One of the most glaring is The Bee’s apparent ignorance of one of Modesto’s greatest treasures, its cemeteries: Acacia Memorial Park, Modesto Citizens Cemetery, Modesto Pioneer Cemetery and St. Stanislaus Catholic Cemetery. The stories of the lives of those buried in the cemeteries is, to a large degree, the history of Modesto.
This last Memorial Day, Acacia Memorial Park hosted a memorial service in tribute to America’s veterans. The VFW and the American Legion presented a program honoring America’s fallen heroes. Rep. Jeff Denham and Assemblywoman Kristin Olsen contributed their thoughts and time at the service. The Bee chose only to mention the service conducted at Lakewood Memorial Park, as though only the people of Waterford and Lakewood Memorial Park chose to honor the sacrifice of our armed forces. This, of course, is not true. The Bee should try harder to be representative of all their readership.
