Are the millions to be spent on Modesto’s energy project really worth it?
Replacing 9,500 streetlights with longer-lasting, more efficient lights and performing other upgrades to reduce energy costs is actually a brilliant scheme to help save money on utility bills. The city’s hesitation can be understood, since the sum Siemens is charging is quite large and goes on for 15 years. Modesto officials have calculated the cost of this project is significantly less than the firm’s total bid. Also, there are many competitors for this project who claim Siemens is charging more than necessary. Unless Modesto and Siemens can settle this issue to benefit the city and the company, the city should exit the project. But city officials should not end the idea of making the city more energy efficient.
