I want to respond to “Obama gave us rotten fruit” (Letters, June 8): The writer from Manteca should take his melons and join the commentators on Fox News, where a person is accused, tried and convicted without due process. How many rotten melons were there in the 500 or so prisoners released by President Bush? And he didn’t get anything in return.
I do not know how old the letter writer is, or if he ever served in the military. I served over 20 years and I am a veteran of two wars. I saw some brave soldiers and also some who broke down and were no use in the front lines. After a few engagements, some lose their nerve. Combat is a terrible thing; one must overcome fear to perform one’s duty. We do unbelievable things we never thought we could ever dream of doing. How strong do you think our military would be knowing that if you got killed, wounded or captured, no one would make any attempt to bring you back?
