On May 10 there was an interesting letter (“Say hey, happy birthday”) about an encounter with Willie Mays. I am sure the writer cherishes that glove signed by Willie.
When I was sports director at the old KCEY radio station in Turlock, I not only interviewed Mays for my program, “Sports Digest,” I was also a charter member of the Warrior Booster Club of the then-young Stanislaus State University. Jim Bowen was the baseball coach and he needed a guest speaker for his banquet.
So (Stanislaus State sports spokesman) Will Keener and I got hold of Mays and he agreed to do it for half a beef! Since we had booster members who had cattle ranches, we told him no problem. Then a few days later he called Keener back and wanted a whole beef. Again, Keener told him no problem.
Can you imagine in today’s world, sports celebrities doing something like that? After the banquet I thanked the Say Hey Kid on my radio show and closed my program as I did for nine years, “This is Mike Rey, rounding third and heading for home!”
