The Modesto Bee’s editorial “Feinstein’s water bill flowing to where money is” (Opinions, April 18) criticizes Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s legislation that allows more Delta water to flow to a certain billionaire constituent and contributor who farms in the Westlands Water District. Unfortunately, The Bee fails to address the question of whether Stewart Resnick’s trees will actually get any of that water.
An earmark inserted by Feinstein into the 2012 spending bill signed by President Barack Obama allows water districts, such as Westlands, to sell the federally subsidized water they receive to urban consumers and developers in Southern California. Should Westlands see greater profit in selling the water than in watering trees, it is free to do so. I wonder what the mark-up on that water would be?
While we were praying for our rain, Stewart Resnick simply tapped Congress for his.
